We can’t wait to see you in the studio!

Mondays, March 2-23

Contemporary with Katherine Maxwell

This is an advanced-level contemporary technique and repertory class that balances functional fitness with the exploration of movement as a form of storytelling. Maxwell combines her expertise as a personal trainer with her creative instincts as the Choreographer and Artistic Director of Hivewild to create a highly athletic and intellectually stimulating class environment, described as “an invitation to connect with the body while sourcing tools from both intuition and education”. Maxwell’s pedagogy uses auditory, visual, and consent-based physical cues to communicate all class information while accommodating as many learning styles as possible. Class instruction is tailored to allow for interpretive approaches to choreographic movement, and conditioning and strengthening exercises are modified for each body.

Class begins with a breathwork-based body scan, followed by exercises that focus on alignment, strength, injury prevention, and tailored education for hypermobile bodies. From there, Maxwell guides dancers through a series of intuitive movement prompts to ground the room in creative curiosity, group tasks, and games. Class culminates in phrase work built upon the resonating themes of the day. Dancers can rely on ever-changing phrase material that is athletic, detailed, fluid, and sensation-driven.
